Last month, I had the opportunity to tour the Brazos County Detention Center with Chief Deputy of Corrections Kevin Stuart and spend time getting to know him and his staff. I came away impressed with the way they run the facility and the professionalism they bring to a difficult job every day.

This week, Chief Stuart gave Commissioners Court an update that put some numbers behind what I saw on that visit.

The Brazos County jail population has dropped significantly from its July 2024 peak. As the chart shows, the jail had 599 inmates on September 10, 241 fewer than the peak of 840 in July 2024. Daily populations fluctuate, but the overall trend is encouraging.

There is more to the story than just a lower number. Chief Stuart explained that the county has improved the process for moving state-sentenced inmates out of the county jail and into state custody. That population, which had typically been around 140 to 150 inmates, was down to about 80 when he gave his report.

He specifically credited the District Clerk’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office and the courts for working together to move cases and paperwork more efficiently.

That translates into real cost avoidance for taxpayers. With the lower population, the jail was able to close one dorm last week and move those inmates into other dorms. That means the jail no longer has to staff one round-the-clock post that normally requires five full-time employees to cover, which Chief Stuart said is helping reduce pressure on overtime.

I appreciate Sheriff Wayne Dicky, Chief Deputy Stuart and the @brazoscountysheriff detention staff for the work they are doing, along with the other county departments whose cooperation is helping make these improvements possible.

Better coordination, more efficient operations and real cost avoidance are all good news for Brazos County taxpayers.

Today, as we remember September 11, 2001, we honor the first responders who ran toward danger when others were running away. Twenty-five years later, that same spirit of courage and service is alive in communities across our country, including right here in Brazos County.

A recent story is a powerful reminder.

When a truck plunged into a pond in Brazos County, two young men, Garrett Mallett and Cooper Matthews, stopped and jumped into the water to help. First responders soon arrived, including Brazos County Precinct 3 Volunteer Fire Chief Matt Drennan and Assistant Chief Katlene Ginn.

Katlene immediately entered the water, where she worked alongside Garrett to reach the trapped driver and performed CPR as they fought to save his life. Tragically, Jim Hesse later passed away from his injuries, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

In the middle of that tragedy, we saw something worth recognizing: ordinary people willing to act, and trained first responders willing to put themselves in harm’s way for someone they had never met.

I’ve had the privilege of spending time with Matt and Katlene and learning more about the men and women who serve our communities. Their work rarely makes headlines. They simply answer the call.

I want to say thank you to Matt, Katlene, and every firefighter, law enforcement officer, EMS professional, dispatcher, volunteer and first responder serving Brazos County.

We remember those we lost 25 years ago. We honor those who answered the call that day. And we remain grateful for those who continue to answer it today.

Brazos County set the FY2027 tax rate today at $0.443474 per $100 valuation in a 3-2 vote.

That’s below the highest rate considered, and I’m glad they came down. But it’s still above the No New Revenue (NNR) rate of $0.414658.

The county’s own numbers show the adopted rate will bring in about $8.56 million more from existing property than the NNR rate.

After sitting through the county budget process this year and last, I look forward to bringing my experience and perspective to the Court when we begin this process again next year.

Show the math. Cut the fat.

Some experiences stay with you long after coming home. My time in Nepal was one of those. The people we met and the communities we traveled through have stuck with me.

One thing I remember so clearly is the incredible scale of the mountains rising above the narrow river valleys below. Traveling through that part of Nepal gave me a lasting appreciation for both the beauty of the country and how vulnerable those communities can be when water comes rushing down from the Himalayas.

Seeing the devastation there now is heartbreaking. May God bring comfort to the families who have lost everything, protect those still in danger, and give strength to the rescuers working in incredibly difficult conditions.

It seems strange to pray for water to recede in Nepal while praying for it to fall on the fires here in Texas. It is a reminder of how little is within our control, and of the power of God, who can quiet even the wind and the waves.

What a great night for a great cause supporting @bryan.isd!

Bev and I really enjoyed the @bisd.foundation Hometown Reunion last night.
This event has become an impressive fundraiser for Bryan ISD. Last year alone, Hometown Reunion raised more than $325,000 to support students and educators across the district.

A big thank you to Sarah Braden, Tamara Wingfield, event chairs Brittany McBride and Bless Stennis, the Foundation board, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who put in the work to make last night happen.

And the “Hometown Reunion” name was especially fitting for Beverly. She went to Bryan High and caught up with many classmates. It was fun for her to see old friends. What a great community we are blessed to live in and see so many of them still giving back to Bryan ISD. She is still my photographer so my apologies that I never get her in a picture. I will get better at that. 🙂

The proposed I-14 alignments have been published, and there is a lot to take in.

For some, this represents needed infrastructure and an opportunity to prepare for the growth coming to our region. For others, these maps represent something much more personal. They may represent a home, a farm, a ranch, a business, or land that has been in a family for generations.

Those are real concerns, and I take them very seriously.

Brazos County is growing. We can’t ignore that, and we shouldn’t. Our responsibility is to prepare for the future and make sure our infrastructure can support the community we are becoming.

But preparing for growth doesn’t mean we stop valuing the people, property, and communities that made this a great place to live in the first place.

A line on a map may look simple, especially when it doesn’t run close to your property. What that line represents for a landowner is anything but simple. I know what it feels like to have “a line on the map” running right through the middle of my own property.

That’s why this process deserves our attention.

TxDOT is holding a public meeting in Bryan on Tuesday, August 18 at Legends Event Center and asking for input from the community. We need to show up and make sure they hear from us.

Look at the proposed alignments. Attend the meeting. Ask the TxDOT representatives questions. Submit your comments by September 10.

If you support I-14, say so. If you oppose it, say so. If you believe an alignment should be moved, explain why. Don’t assume someone else will speak for you.

As your future County Commissioner, I will stay engaged in this process. I will ask the hard questions, push for transparency, and make sure the process is followed. I will continue to stand up for the property rights and interests of the people I represent.

Decisions about the future of Brazos County deserve the involvement of the people who live, work, own property, and raise their families here.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to sit down with Chad Bohne, District Engineer for TxDOT’s Bryan District. We talked about transportation, growth, current projects, and some of the opportunities and challenges facing Brazos County.

One topic we discussed was I-14. If you’re interested in learning more, TxDOT will host a Public Engagement Meeting on Tuesday, August 18, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Legends Event Center in Bryan. I encourage anyone interested in the project to attend. I’ll continue sharing updates here as more information becomes available.

I believe good leadership starts with showing up, asking questions, and building relationships with the people doing the work. Meetings like this help build trust, strengthen communication, and create opportunities to work together on the issues that matter most to Brazos County.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep learning, listening, and preparing to serve.

Beverly and I enjoyed attending the Hispanic Forum of Bryan/College Station’s 28th Annual Scholarship Gala last night.
